My first time in Tuam hole!
On Friday the 22nd I was going on my first trip to Tuam hole with my parents and Aoife. I was very excited! I was going to try out freestyle properly for the first time! Once we were all ready we had to cross a road to get to the river. When we got there, there was another person already getting in. They were doing some cool surfing. Aoife, my mum and I did some warm ups, while we waited for my dad. When I got into the water, I was both nervous and very excited. We first talked about ferry-gliding. Aoife told me my PEAS Position, Edge, Angle and Speed. Then we ferry-glided over to an eddy on the other side. I think I ferry-glided over well, I'm not sure. After Aoife and I did a few ferry-glides back and forth Aoife thought I was ready to go into the hole. I was very excited and nervous. Aoife went first. When it was my go, I kept paddling and took one big stroke just before the hole. Aoife of course made it. While I... did not. I paddled towards the middle of the hole. Swiped the foam, but as I went over, the hole sucked me in! It sucked me in slowly at first but then just capsized me.): The water was very cold, even though I had a dry cag and trousers.I kinda panicked, and popped my deck, instead of rolling, or even attempting to roll. When I came up Aoife told me to try and swim to the eddy. It was very hard to swim, because the water was really fast. But I swam as hard as I could, and made it to where I was supposed to be. Darragh (the guy who was also kayaking there) was taking care of my boat with Aoife. Then Daddy came to the edge to help me get out. When I got out and back onto the water Aoife asked me if I wanted to go again after a few ferry-glides. I said yes. I wanted to show the hole whose boss. So we went again. She made it. Then it was my go. Again. I paddled as hard as I could and went a bit more to the right of the hole. I went over, and made it! When I came down Aoife helped me get onto the water again. This time we weren't ferry-gliding back and forth we ferry-glided to one side of the river and back. We did that for a while, as I had to get better at that. After that Aoife asked if I wanted to challenge the hole again. I said yes. But this time Mummy came with us. Aoife went, made it. Then I went. I didn't make it. So after they rescued me it was Mum's turn. She capsized. After the go with tackling the hole a third time, We did more ferry-gliding. But then when Aoife asked if I would go again, I said no, I was too tired and cold. But she told me why I kept capsizing. I went to the middle too much! After such a long day we went home. I had so much FUN!!! (:
